If you fall behind or go ahead, it is actually a good thing for everyone else because when they come to your blog they either get a review or a preview. It is a good idea to keep up with the pace though, its a bit like running with others, if you fall behind you feel behind, and that doesn't feel very nice.Leigh Blackallhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17845313396595646728noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7096865613671567567.post-74001186076445043722008-08-21T21:55:00.000+12:002008-08-21T21:55:00.000+12:00Hi, just popped by to wish you well with the cours...Hi, just popped by to wish you well with the course. Of course, skimming a post in 2 minutes that someone took an hour to think and write does not qualify as "reading", and thinking takes even more time. After I left this message, I thought more about my own involvement in communities and recall how often I was in and out. I work with a community for a few months, then take off. Sometimes, after I've accomplished a goal, I'm gone for years.
But then Deb, in that respect, isn't online community very much like offline?
And thanks for posting on my blog. I just wanted to compare it to how I cope with people waxing and waning in my own community and how even though I might see it as them not being interested it doesn't mean they aren't still committed - it's just that life gets in the way sometimes.
And actually Artie I am dependable.
If you knew me, you'd know that.
p.s how anyone can keep up with the e-mail list on this course is a mystery to me. I just have time to skim alot of what it said and therefore may respond with a very shallow perception of the things people are posting. I don't like that and I think that one thing that would really help is if more people came to their senses about how much is manageable. can I absorb the written communications of unlimited numbers of posters? I don't think so. In a traditional community, in large international communities, like Rotary International, for example, I would seldom have to deal with more than about 15 or 20 people every two weeeks. I think I want to redefine the term "Global Community". It doesn't work the way people are defining it. I need you to process and respond to my posts. If you are just going to come and go and not be here when you are needed, then that makes me set you in the "Inactive Member" catagory. In a real community you belong, and this is a real community in which you are needed. I need you to respond to Leigh's questions in order to get the energy to continue my own blogging. I may even like to work on a project with you for the upcoming Conference, but I need you to be dependable. And if you are going to present a project with other people, you want them to be there through the whole process. You can do whatever you want in a virtual community but I'm here for real community where you and I both belong and depend upon eachother. Like the others, your your post caught my eye since I also feel a little overwhelmed. This might have something to dow tih coming in late and trying to catch up with the discussions, and when I make a slight dent the conversation has moved on and new ones have started. And in wanting to post a comment I get a little confused to all that was said before (hard to digest in the rapid reading required in the limited time I can afford to assign to that task). So at the moment I am sort of lurking but don't want to be such, thus I am trying to find an avenue in.

Your post however, gives me the knowledge that I am not alone in this boat. This shared experience is uplifting and encouraging and an extremely important point in any community: that no member should feel alone. Identifying an effective means of monitoring this and adressing are important. I wonder, in the FOC case for example, if a post could be put up with a subject such as "Feel as if you have missed the boat" or some such title, which may invite lurkers, latecomers and simply overwhelmed persons to join the communication. What do you think?

My blog is at: http://eruminating.blogspot.com/, (not sure if this needs a html tag to make it link)Marcel Bruynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08419983779582130750noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7096865613671567567.post-56494789720272078872008-08-07T08:28:00.000+12:002008-08-07T08:28:00.000+12:00Hi Derek, yes we did meet at the Etienne Wenger wor...Hi Derek,
yes we did meet at the Etienne Wenger workshop (I THINK it was you I met in the Koru Lounge afterwards???)
Thanks for making the connection, and I'm really glad I went that day, chiefly because it gave me lots to think about and I found out about this course. An interesting thing about your son and the phone thing - good to see an open minded /futures thinking media teacher (aren't we all!) I've just been slagging off a school up here because they've banned cellphones at school. Pretty shortsighted I'd say given the educational potential of mobile technology. I used to work at Christchurch CoE. My son takes Media Studies. I was extremely impressed last week: he texted me to say "Got a Merit in Chemistry" (a rare occurrence). So I called him back to see if he wanted to go for lunch to celebrate. His media studies teacher merely said "Take the call outside please".

(There is a lot here: why is he texting in class, why did I call not text, why wasn't his phone on silence . .) but he loves MS and I am grateful to at least one teacher who understands. Mostly school has been injurious to his education.

Your community: I will posts my paper on Teacher communities in NZ once I degut it from actual refs and context.

One fragment: Promote reputation. Get to know some people (as many as you can) and what they are good at/interested in. SO I either read and respond to the e-mails, go over the readings, write on my blog, or read other blogs and comment there.
Since I only just began this, I can't say how well it works, but I'm hoping to be able to better focus on the toic at hand. Perhaps this is some help to you.

I think the kind of communication that is going on or possible requires a change of headset. Up until now, we had a linear way of communicating when we couldn't see the other person f2f. But now perhaps you need to look at it as being on a campus where conversation takes place in many different rooms. If you want to make links or invite others to join in, then putting them on a place like your blog is probably a good place. Other tools like twitter I would consider to be more like chatting in the hallway.

Gosh, I'm chattering away again, but I hope that you can use something of what I've left here.
The other point is your question of lurkers. Maybe as a facilitator the best way to find out is to ask in private.

btw-the video is hilarious - open mailboxIllya Arnethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03861197769628094809noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7096865613671567567.post-34931490960489821072008-08-04T22:39:00.000+12:002008-08-04T22:39:00.000+12:00Deb, your title to this post is apt indeed. I am a fan of open source, and interested in this type of open learning course. I feel your concern with the amount of reading that would result to attending email, wiki and the tasks we are set. I think each person needs to determine the level of interaction they can manage, and I reckon for some this will be lurking.

In regards to where do you respond, I think you hit the nail on the head when you said "I may be the only link between them." By linking, we guide discovery. So I think commenting on a blog post is most appropriate.

Thanks for reading mine, and taking time to comment. It's a daily struggle to be honest - most teachers have very little extra time and would, I'm sure, prefer it if I just 'gave them the stuff'."

I agree that this is one of the key challenges of facilitation - in almost any context. Some people would just prefer to 'get the stuff'. I hope we can shine a light on this over the coming weeks!

On a technical note, I would like to get started with wikis.
